1Mission House Build
Check out 1Mission, an amazing organization that builds houses for impoverished families. We had the pleasure of joining them to help build a house in Mexico and spend time with the family that would occupy it.
1Mission is a community development organization giving people in poverty the opportunity to earn a house by serving their community. With over 155,000 hours of community service hours logged thus far, they have built over eight hundred houses for families in need.
Oasis team members and family traveled to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico to help build a house with 1Mission. The leaders of 1Mission gave a tour of the town and explained their mission – to build houses for families in need while building a self-sustaining community development program through art, gardening, embroidery, cooking, and health classes.
The Juarez Rios family put in over 400 hours of community service to help their neighbors and start building their house. After meeting the family, we spent a few days working together to put a roof up and finish the walls, while the children played together and we enjoyed each other’s company despite some language barriers. At the end of the trip, the house was ready for finishing touches from the next group. All of us who participated felt honored to have been a small part of the mission to house families and help develop a sustainable and healthy community.
